How to change Oil and Filters?

Lubricating oil becomes contaminated by different matter (dust, water, fuel, wear metals, etc). Engine lubricating oil filters cannot be cleaned. The lubricating oil and the oil filter have now done their work and it is time that they are changed.

Like the human body, the less contaminated the "Life Blood" of an engine the longer it will "Live".

It is therefore advisable not to exceed the service period for lubricating oil and filters recommended by the manufacturer. Measuring jugs, funnels, etc., should be kept clean and free of contaminants.
NOTE: Never, never mix the smallest amounts of anti-freeze, brake fluid and lubricating oil - the result is disastrous! If possible rather use products directly from their containers.

Here is what you will need:

  1. A 5 litre can of Midas Liquid Gold or Castrol engine lubricating oil. Check the owner's manual for SAE rating of the lubricating oil and volume required to service the vehicle.
  2. A new Fram oil filter for the specific vehicle.
  3. A set of spanners and an oil filter wrench.
  4. Measuring containers, funnels etc., if necessary. Absorbent non-fluff cloth.
  5. An empty 5 litre container with side cut out to crate a container for draining old engine oil.

Method:

  • Step 1.
Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature making it easier to drain the engine oil. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground. Switch off the engine, open the bonnet and remove the oil filter cap.
  • Step 2.
Locate the oil drain plug, usually a hexagonal nut, situated at the lowest point of the sump which is at the bottom of the engine. Loosen the drain plug with the correct size spanner, preferably a socket or ring spanner by turning it counter clockwise. Before removing the plug completely, place the container in the best position to catch all the old oil. Be careful, the oil will be hot.
  • Step 3.
While waiting for the engine oil to drain, loosen the old oil filter by turning it counter clockwise with the oil filter wrench. Complete removal by hand. Use a cloth to hold the filter, as it will be hot to hold.
  • Step 4.
Clean the filter seat on the engine and apply a light smearing of new oil to the filter gasket of the new Fram filter with your finger. Now install the new Fram oil filter, specified for your vehicle. Start screwing the filter on by hand, be careful not to cross the thread. Only tighten the filter by hand.
  • Step 5.
Remove any sludge or metal particles from the drain plug, wipe clean. Replace the oil drain plug in the sump. Note some vehicles use a sealing gasket or washer with the drain plug. Thread tape can be used to assist with sealing on those drain plugs not fitted with sealing gasket or washers. Tighten up with the spanner. Measure out the correct amount of new oil and pour into the engine through the oil funnel. Check the dip-stick for the correct oil level. Start the engine and let it fast idle foe 1 to 2 minutes to allow the new oil to circulate through the filter. Check for leaks around the filter and the drain plug. Switch off the engine, wait a few minutes, remove the dip-stick and check the level, add oil if necessary.

The filter is the only component that offers engine protection.

It is also advisable to change the air filter at this time.

Midas Motor Parts Centres recommend FRAM OIL AND AIR FILTERS AND MIDAS or CASTROL OIL.
