WORKING OUT A BUDGET (2)

Optional extras
With the aftermarket craze still evident, you may be tempted to add some glamour to your vehicle. Be careful though. Some extras, such as a good sound system or airconditioning, may actually slightly improve the resale value of your car, but you are unlikely to be rewarded with a high resale price if your car looks too “pimped”. Large spoilers, chromed wheels and colourful graphics may add character, but the car may be more difficult to sell later.

Aftermarket warranty
Most vehicle manufacturers/importers will void your warranty if you modify your vehicle, or service it at a non-authorised centre. To counter this, several aftermarket companies offer warranty, servicing and maintenance agreements specifically targeting consumers who want to modify their vehicle, or enhance its performance and economy. But, as a rule, you should consult the company that you have commissioned to work on your vehicle about such matters, with written promises, so you have a fallback position should something go wrong. Our advice is not go overboard with aftermarket accessories! They may even lower our car's value at resale time.
