After having impressed not only here at CAR
but worldwide, the Audi R8 continues on its very
fresh quest for ultimate glory in the supercar
segment - especially as it is Audi's first attempt
to unsettle the supercar roost and everyone seems
to mention that term "911" whenever
the R8 pops up in conversation.

Lighter than an M5, equipped with the same
storming F1-derived 5,0-litre V10 engine and all
the desirability that come with an M-car. The
M6 has all the credentials you'd hope for in a
strong competitor in this year's shootout
now
if only it came in manual . . .

With an awe-inspiring AMG 6,0-litre V12 biturbo
powerplant clothed in some of the sleekest sheet
metal in the business, the Mercedes Benz CL 65
AMG could very well be the highlight of the track
shootout this year - even with the presence of
such exotics as the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera,
Spyker C8 and Pagani Zonda.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS may look rather odd,
with its black trim, graphics and wheels on frog
green paintwork, but those RS initials do mean something
to those in the know, and could prove a strong factor
in the GT3 RS' success against the likes of more
powerful machinery such as the Lamborghini Gallardo
Superleggera and Pagani Zonda.

The Porsche 911 Turbo was one of the unexpected
stars of last years Track Attack shootout
putting. Despite its unassuming looks (in
this company, at least) and automatic gearbox, any
car that can crack 0-100 km/h in 4,0 seconds deserves
some serious respect. It humbled all before it in
last years Track Attack, but this year the
competition just got a lot more intense.

Full of British pedigree, enough to astound
even the most ardent fan of Stuttgart's-finest,
who will not dispute the racing heritage embedded
in Aston Martin's history, the Aston Martin DB9
is undoubtedly one of the stars of this year's shootout.

Super car manufacturers have this uncanny knack
of wringing more performance out of their outrageous
creations... Sant' Agata recently put the Lamborghini
Gallardo on a strict diet to produce the Gallardo
Superleggera - lightweight and powerful it maybe,
but is that enough to unsettle the rest of the serious
metal at this year's shootout?

In last year's track attack, the RS4 was perched
somewhere near the top of the performance line up.
The wealth of exotic supercars in this year's shootout
may relegate the über A4 to the lower echelons
of the line up when it comes to outright power,
but if we've learned anything from the RS4, it's
that it simply cannot be underestimated. Could this
wolf in exec-mobile clothing have designs on showing
up some of the more exotic metal that will be charging
around the track?

The CAV GT - a modern-day replica of the iconic
24 hours of Le Mans-winning Ford GT40 - is the dark
horse of our Upington supercar shootout. Built by
Cape Town-based Auto Futura, CAV have not made any
compromises in the road racer's manufacturing process
and customers can even have their orders race-prepped.

Sporting one of the largest V12 engines ever
made, the Pagani Zonda C12 S 7,3 is one of the
most powerful sports cars ever to grace the road.
Lucky us that CAR was granted one for its track
shootout, where it got put head-to-head with Lamborghini's
Gallardo Superleggera, the Audi R8, the Porsche
911 GT3 RS, as well as the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Now there's a name you don't see too often
on South African blacktop. Produced by Dutch manufacturer
Spyker Cars, who has a none-too glamorous history
of building aircraft engines, the C8 Spyder is
certainly a striking, if not the conventionally-beautiful,
car to look at. Can this quirky addition to the
shootout fleet.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster was one
of the most anticipated unveilings of 2006. It
was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and
CAR was lucky enough to get their hands on one
for this year's track shootout.

It got a controversial write-up on CARtoday,
then it narrowly lost to the RS4 in the comparative
between the two, now it goes head-to-head with
a host of performance vehicles in CAR Magazine's
Track Shootout. Where will the infamous BMW M3
place amongst some of the world's most acclaimed
performance models?
