The
Gautrain project continues to elicit controversial comment.
This includes many suggestions of alternatives to solve
the country's transport bottlenecks.
The current projected cost for the development of the
Gautrain is R20-billion, up from an original budget
of R13-billion. One of the most interesting proposals
doing the rounds is this one:
Twenty billion rand would be enough to cover the costs
of a fleet of taxis running free of charge between Pretoria
and Johannesburg every 2 minutes at the AA-tariff of
R2,50/km for 50 years! … Or to build another 44 lanes
on the M1 highway!
