HEADING FOR A CRESCENDO

The South African vehicle market is certainly on a roll and firmly on course to establish a new annual sales record. Earlier there had been doubts about whether the frenetic sales pace could continue and, if it did, then there was a question of whether dealers would be in a position to supply the big increase in demand. It has been proved that these doubts were unfounded.

A motor industry black economic empowerment (BEE) task group has put its deliberations on hold and discontinued meetings until the government issues the "second phase' of its revised policies relating to the broad-based BEE scorecard.

The affordability of vehicles in South Africa remains a controversial topic, despite the euphoria of the current boom in new vehicle sales.

Flagging vehicle exports seem to be improving in the second half of the year helped, in part, by the strong performance of Toyota's Hilux export programme.

Toyota continues to be the dominant car brand in South Africa, according to the results of extensive business-to-consumer market research conducted by Markinor for the 2005 Markinor- Sunday Times Top Brands Survey.
